Believing my job is important. Employee engagement is directly correlated with how important others perceive their role. Companies with respected and marginalized roles see a matching bifurcation in employee engagement.

Bad example: How often have you heard someone say disparagingly, “Oh, he is (only) in operations or finance or IT” or any function other than the big deal winner? This message is as insidious as “you are our dumb or worthless child,” yet it happens all the time.

This phenomenon occurs because of a tiered respect culture perpetuated by poor or oblivious leaders. The signs may be subtle, but employees are good at reading the tea leaves when they or their functions are not valued.

Good example: Pre-COVID, I attended an all-employee company event arranged on the island of Sardinia, which required an enormous amount of coordination, logistics, and planning for the five hundred people. One speaker gave a compelling talk on the power of relationships that required his preparation and months of video interviews and careful editing by a team.

Before wrapping up and before the audience could applaud for his stage performance, the speaker asked the team who’d made his speech content possible to join him on stage for the well-deserved recognition. Teams get great things done and recognizing them begets more great things.
